Satay House, London’s most established Malaysian restaurant, combines traditional recipes and
family-run affability with modern culinary techniques and sleek contemporary design. With an
overall design concept devised and undertaken by industry leaders, Bentheim (Wagamama,
Groucho Club), both floors of Satay House’s 70 cover restaurant exude a sleek confident
sophistication by mixing vivid block colours and smooth oak tables and leather banquettes, with
Hibiscus wall reliefs and wicker chairs. The modernisation does not detract from the original
ambience and service, which remains friendly, relaxed and homely.
Satay House opened its doors in Paddington, London in 1973 – one of the first authentic
restaurants of its genre and soon paving the way for others. Since its inception, the restaurant’s
founders, the late Jaaffar Shawal and his wife Zaharah Hashim, have strived to bring the
unique and delicate flavours of Malaysia to London, using experience from their hotel and
catering ventures in their home country; The Shawal Restaurant and Lumut Hotel and Beach
Resort.
Satay House emerged as an answer to the lack of traditionally Malaysian restaurants in the
capital, with Shawal and Hashim pinpointing the need to provide the Malaysian community in
London with an authentic taste of home, whilst offering their country’s unknown colour and
diversity to new markets. The establishment remains family run today.
The current daughter and son team, Fatizah and Irqam have continued their parent’s dreams
and hard work, endeavoring to move with the times whilst not forgetting their culture or the
venue’s loyal customers. The success of their enterprise can be measured by the clientele which
includes Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia, members of
Brunei Royal family and Jimmy Choo.
The menu at Satay House is both varied and traditional, with each dish directly descended from
family recipes and modern dishes from Malaysia. The menu at Satay House boasts a variety of
noodle and rice dishes and grilled options perfectly complement the richer curries coconutinfused
and beautifully fragrant choices, including a range of aromatic, exotic desserts. The
restaurant’s namesake, the satay, served on skewers with the distinct spicy peanut sauce is one
of the signature dishes, whilst the noodle-based Kway Teow Goreng and grilled mackerel ‘Ikan
Panggang’ have remained popular choices. The chief policy of Executive Chef Mohammad Junus
Wahab is to use fresh ingredients and only authentic produce, often sourced directly from Malaysia.
