A top South African wine estate has teamed up with one of London’s leading restaurateurs to open a new restaurant on the banks of the river Thames.
Called High Timber, it is the brainchild of Gary and Kathy Jordan, of Jordan Wine Estate, and the co-founder of City of London restaurant Vivat Bacchus, Neleen Strauss. The restaurant focuses on relaxed wine dining and boasts the only Thames-side seating in the City.
“This is a natural progression for us - we make wines that should be enjoyed with great food and what better place is there to do this than in our own London restaurant, where Jordan wines will be showcased alongside the very best in the world,” said Gary Jordan.
“We have chosen London because it is the most knowledgeable wine City in the world. It has some of the finest restaurants and that’s where our wine deserves to be.”
Doors opened on 27 March 2009.
Called High Timber because that’s the ancient London street on which it is sited, the restaurant is 50 yards from the St Paul’s Cathedral side of the Millennium Bridge and looks across to Shakespeare’s Globe and the Tate Modern.
High Timber seats 80 people and includes temperature and humidity controlled red and white cellars, where customers are welcomed to view and choose their wines. There will also be wine maturation storage, a private dining room situated in the middle of the wine cellars, and a holding bar. The European menu, with a focus on grilled steaks and British meats, has been created by head chef Justin Saunders, formerly of Dukes Hotel, Mayfair.
The Wine
The restaurant holds around 40,000 bottles on site in two main cellars.
“We have the best South African collection in Europe, rare vintages and names not available anywhere else,” said Gary Jordan.
“Our cellars also contain a spectacular range of European wines, across all budgets; Neleen has used her last seven years living in England well, and explored many wineries throughout France, Spain and Italy.
“Kathy and I also have some formidable US contacts, as we originally studied there, and many friends in the Australian and New Zealand wineries, so we will be very well represented there too.”
High Timber also stocks a range of British wines, including a selection of established names and new discoveries.
The Food
“This will be wine dining, where people can relax in the South African way, have a good time, be spoilt by fantastic food and service, while drinking the best wines. After all, it’s what we like to do ourselves.” said Neleen Strauss.
High Timber also houses a cheese room specialising in seasonal cheeses alongside a selection of original chutneys, honeys and jams.

Background
About Gary and Kathy Jordan
Gary and Kathy Jordan have been making world-class wines since 1993 on their Stellenbosch farm with a history going back over 300 years. He’s a geologist, she’s an economist – together this husband and wife team is a phenomenon.
They met at school, married in their mid-20s and studied wine-making together at Davis, California. The pair worked internationally for two years, refining their high-energy instincts with practical experience. They returned home to build a cellar in 1992 when they took over Gary's father's 146-hectare Stellenbosch estate and embarked on an extensive replanting programme, specialising in classic varieties suited to the different soils and slopes.
